From September 6 to October 13, 2018
Opening on Thursday, September 6, at 5:30 p.m.
For its new exhibition line-up, le Magasin is happy to present À l’affiche : retour en arrière a retrospective revisiting the last three years of the À l’affiche project.
Developed by Arprim since 2013, À l’affiche encourages the creation of original prints, printed images and posters by contemporary Canadian and Quebec artists, both renowned and emerging. For three years now, this project is produced in collaboration with UQAM’s school of visual and media arts, and promotes the integration of emerging artists in the professional art milieu, all while generating an independent revenue that helps fund Arprim’s activities through the sale of artwork.
The process is simple: each year, one or two professional artists are invited to design an image for a limited-edition print, which is then screen-printed by paid art students. Always working towards the advancement of the printed arts, Arprim makes sure to select guest artists whose practices do not generally incorporate this medium. The idea is to give them a space to explore, as well as the proper technical support. In this context, the artist’s own creative vision is combined with the advanced printmaking skills of the students, to initiate an exchange in which each participant benefits from the other’s high level of expertise.
For three years now, these collaborations have yielded quality, original and exclusive works that fully embrace the limits and possibilities afforded by screen-printing. In the exhibition, works produced for a previous edition of À l’affiche are shown next to others by the same artists, demonstrating how each project fits in with their authors’ artistic approach, their formal and conceptual concerns, as well as the recurring themes in their practice. How did François Lacasse and Julie Trudel connect screen-printing to their approach as painters? How did Myriam Dion’s own meticulous cut-outs inform the creation of such hypnotically detailed images? How did the Feed graphic design studio’s work in typography influence their Guillon series of posters? This exhibition gives visitors a glimpse into the wealth of potential that the art of print has to offer, especially when in the hands of artists from such diverse backgrounds as the ones brought together by the À l’affiche project year after year.
Arprim would like to thank the Galerie Hugues Charbonneau, Artexte as well as the artists and collaborators for the generous loan of works.
The exhibition will set the stage for the launch of À l’affiche’s new edition, on October 9, featuring an exclusive diptych by Montreal artistYann Pocreau. Also, for a limited time only, all prints from previous editions will be on sale at their original launch price! Visit the online shop to know more.
