Production of the Works
Under a partnership developed with Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM)'s École des arts visuels et médiatiques, the project À l'affiche is printed since 2015 in their screen printing workshops by paid student-printers. Under the supervision of professor Gwenaël Bélanger and technicians in the printing arts department, students collaborate with guest artists in all stages of the realization of their works, from conceptualization to the last finishing touches. As a real educational project, À l'affiche allows students to develop advanced skills in printed art by printing complex images in a professional context.
What is silk-screen printing ?
Silk-screen printing is a printing technique by which ink is pushed through a stencil on a silk or polyester screen. With a photosensitive emulsion coating applied to the screen, different pictures or patterns can be transferred with a photographic accuracy. Following exposure to light, the emulsion hardens and clogs the pores of the screen, leaving visible only the pictures or patterns, thus turned into stencils. Images like those of À l'affiche may require nearly a dozen different stencils, superimposed or juxtaposed to obtain the desired result.
